5 Things to Consider If You Want to Home School Your Child

So, you’ve decided that homeschooling just might be for you.  Don’t jump into the process without doing your homework.  There are few things you’ll want to consider before you start to home school your child.

Here are five things you should consider:

  • Your Teaching Style

Matching your teaching style to your child’s learning style is key.  When you teach in a way that doesn’t align with the way your child learns, you will create a frustrating and tense learning environment that neither of you will enjoy.

  • Choose A Schedule

Assess your current schedule and decide how you will plan your home school day.  Are you a morning person?  Does your child seem more alert and easier to engage at a specific time of day?  These are important questions to ask yourself while you are determining a daily schedule.

  • Know Your State Requirements and Track Your Progress

Each state has specific requirements for homeschooling families.  You’ll want to check your state education agency or the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) to find your state guidelines.

Even if your state doesn’t require you to submit quarterly or annual records to track your home school education program, you should still track your progress.  Tracking is a key component of developing a seamless home school program.  Know what areas/subjects you’ve covered, know what your child has mastered, and know what you need to continue to work through.

  • Choose a Curriculum

There are so many curriculum offerings in both hard copy and electronic format.  Begin researching different curricula to help you decide if you want to use a ready-made program, create a custom program, or use a combination of the two.

  • Be Flexible

Most importantly, learn to be flexible.  Remember that the plans you make today may change tomorrow.  As you and your child find your home school groove, you may find that scheduling choices, resource selections, and teaching formats may need to be adjusted.

Homeschooling can be very rewarding.  Make the choice to be prepared before you start.
